COVID-19 Has Elevated German Retail Stock Trading to Completely New Levels

Below chart shows retail stock trading activity during the COVID-19 crisis at leading German online bank comdirect:

  • Ø trading activity 2020 to date of 29.2 is more than 2x the long term Ø of 13.5
  • Trading activity peaked in March at 41.7 roughly 2x the previous record high of 21.3
  • Trading activity has remained substantially above previous highs in each month since then

Farewell Dear Data Set 🙁

This post also serves as a farewell to comdirect’s monthly trading update, which has been a dear friend and valuable indicator of retail trading sentiment in the past. Due to the merger with Commerzbank the data set has, at least temporarily, been suspended/abandoned. We hope to see him again one day!
