When Trade Meets Politics…

In the immediate aftermath of the invasion of Ukraine, Russian exports to China rose sharply (of course, energy prices played a role). But since then, imports from China have been rising steadily, while exports have largely stagnated. Compared with the third quarter of 2022, imports have risen by almost 30%, while exports have remained constant. In other words, the Chinese contribution to Russia’s current account surplus is shrinking.
